THE GIANT LANDS: An Airbus A380 lands at the IGI airport in New Delhi on Sunday. The first commercial A380 plane will roll out late this year or early next year.

NEW DELHI: The world's largest passenger aircraft Airbus A380 made its maiden landing in India at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here on Sunday.

The double-decker passenger carrier touched down at 10.45 a.m. to loud cheers from all those who gathered at the airport and outside. Special arrangements were made for the landing of the giant aircraft keeping all security and safety measures in view.

Publicity programme

The Airbus A380 has been brought to the Capital as part of a publicity programme. The aircraft will be on display here till Tuesday evening, following which it will be flown to Mumbai where it will be on display till Thursday.

Kingfisher Airlines, which is the first Indian airline to sign up for the aircraft and has five firm orders with further options for five more, has launched a promotional campaign to provide select guests an opportunity to fly on board the ``wonder'' aircraft.

Kingfisher's first Airbus A380 is expected to come in about four years. By next year at least two airports — in Delhi and Hyderabad — will become Airbus A380 compatible.

``By next year, both the airports will be upgraded to meet the Code F standards to ensure smooth operation of Airbus A380,'' said an officer.

Owing to its ability to make smooth take-offs and flight operations despite its huge size, Airbus A380 has been generating great interest in the aviation industry and also among people across the globe.

Powered by four Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines, the aircraft can accommodate over 800 passengers.
