BON VOYAGE: Coast Guard Vessel `Sangram' leaving the Chennai port on Sunday.
CHENNAI: Indian Coast Guard Ship Sangram left the Chennai port on Sunday to participate in the International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference Asia 2007 (IMDEX 2007), to be held in Singapore from May 15 to 18. The event, which is supported by the Singapore Navy, will focus on the latest developments in maritime defence, with exhibitors from 15 countries showcasing cutting edge technologies, products and services, according to the event website. Apart from the exhibition and conference, the sixth edition of the biennial event will feature visits from about 60 naval delegations, and over 20 warships from 14 nations. Apart from ICGS Sangram, the Indian contingent will include INS Mysore and INS Kuthar. The vessels will be berthed at the Changi Naval Base. ICGS Sangram is an advanced offshore patrol vehicle, commissioned in March 2007, and designed for all weather surveillance and enforcement of maritime regulations. It also provides safety and security to offshore structures, takes part in maritime search and rescue operations, towing, anti-piracy and anti-smuggling operations and helps combat marine pollution. In June 2006, the ship seized 200 kilograms of cocaine worth approximately Rs. 800 crore.
