Announcement to be made in New Delhi by NAIC next week: Raghuveera

ANANTAPUR: Settlement of crop insurance claims for crop loss suffered in 2006 kharif will be settled soon.

Efforts are being made to disburse the benefit to farmers at least by July-end so that it can be useful for them in sowing operations, Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy has said.

Speaking to The Hindu , the Minister said finalisation of reports on crop insurance claims was in the final stages and the settlement of claims (percentage) was likely to be announced by the National Agriculture Insurance Corporation (NAIC) in New Delhi next week.

The State and Central Governments were ready to release the amount required for settlement of claims after the announcement.

The Andhra Pradesh Government had also taken a policy decision to give input subsidy to the farmers who would not be benefited by the crop insurance.

On the procurement of seed groundnut to be supplied to the farmers in the district with subsidy, Mr. Reddy said the Government had already finalised the tenders for procurement of an estimated 10 lakh quintals required for the coming kharif season. Other seed too would be supplied to farmers on subsidy, he said.

The Minister claimed that farmers in the district were benefited by Rs. 2,000 with the interest waiver schemes announced as part of the Prime Minister's Special Package.

On the waiver of interest pertaining to rescheduled loans given in 2004, which had not been done so far, he said Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy was exerting pressure on the Centre and they had agreed in principle to consider the waiver.

Details sought

The Centre had sought details and the Government had submitted them.

He said that 19 lakh new farmers would get crop loans this year and the process of still uncovered farmers was also in progress.
