Impetus to sports It is disheartening that Indiais unable to produce world-class sportspersons. Team India's ignominious exit from the World Cup tournament is a recent example to this sad state of affairs. Sports training must be made compulsory in schools. To tap budding talent, `catch them young' policy should be pursued without any fear or favour. Sports training centres with latest equipment and strong faculty must be opened in all districts. Esikela Udaya Kumar, Tadipatri Classical status for Telugu It was disappointing to read the statement of the Union Minister of State for Human Resources Development that classical language status will be positively given to Telugu by the Central Government within a year ( The Hindu , May 2). The issue is pending for some years now without any justification. Our political leaders at Delhi have to exert pressure on the Central Governmentto declare Telugu as a classical language as quickly as possible, for justice delayed is justice denied. R. Dwarakanatha Rao, Guntakal Stray dog menace This refers to `New means to sterilise stray dogs' ( The Hindu , April 29). Instead of killing stray dogs mercilessly, the problem can be curbed effectively by adopting latest surgical procedures of animal birth control (ABC) in lieu of sterilisation, which comes with some post-operational difficulties. We should emulate the example of Tamil Nadu Government which was successful in sterilising 65,000 stray dogs, i.e. 80 per cent of the population, apart from controlling rabies as well. The Government as well as voluntary organisations should come forward to take such measures to curb the menace. Apart from this, every household should try to adopt a street dog. G. Jagannadh, Ananatapur Falling standards in research This is with reference to the news report `Questions over quality of research in SVU' ( The Hindu , April 25). As the quality of research is falling year after year, in most universities the charm of research is virtually fading. There are several reasons for the falling standards. Primarily, even after getting the highest degree the candidates are neglected in the universities. Then there is lack of financial assistance . Community and regional feeling is seen among research supervisors. Additionally, the examination process has become very easy. Lack of recruitment in universities and in Government institutions is also largely responsible for the falling standards. Therefore, the educational planners should seriously take effective measures to check the falling standards of research. Dr. M. Nazeeruddin, Kurnool
