Over Rs. 22 lakh disbursed as marriage assistance

VILLUPURAM: Higher Education Minister K.Ponmudy disbursed over Rs. 22 lakh under the Moovalur Ramamirtham Memorial Marriage Assistance Scheme to 148 beneficiaries here on Saturday. The beneficiaries included 110 women from Kiliyanur Panchayat Union and 38 from Villupuram town. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ponmudy said it was the Karunanidhi Government that had launched the scheme in 1989 by giving away Rs. 5,000 towards marriage assistance.

Later, the subsequent DMK regime had enhanced the aid to Rs. 10,000 in 1996 and now it was pegged at Rs. 15,000.
