BELLARY: The Bellary Urban Development Authority will focus on self-financing projects in the city. To start with, it has prepared a plan for development of a new layout on Sangankal Road, as part of the self-financing project, according to Arvind Srivastav, Deputy Commissioner and administrator of the Authority. The layout is being developed in a 25.85-acre land already acquired by the Authority. It will invest 20 per cent of the cost, while the remaining amount will be collected from the people, who will be allotted the plots. "The plan prepared in this regard has been forwarded to the State Government for its approval. The project will commence after getting the green signal from the Government," he told The Hindu. Mr. Srivastav said that the Authority has decided to complete all the projects in the layouts developed by it, for which funds had been allocated project-wise. The projects proposed included laying of an underground drainage system, development of parks, roads, storm water drains and street lights in five colonies including Raghavendra colony second stage, Venkateshwar Nagar, Beechi Nagar, Sanjay Gandhi Nagar. (The BUDA had earlier provided some of the basic civic amenities including drinking water but had not attended to other issues). According to him, until the basic amenities are not provided, the layout cannot be handed over to the City Municipal Corporation. "We have made project-wise allocation and the amount will have to be spent for the purpose for which it has been earmarked. After completion of all the projects these layouts will be handed over to the Corporation. In turn, the Corporation will get an additional revenue to the tune of Rs. 16.5 lakh annually by way of property tax," he said.
Drinking water
Mr. Srivastav, who is also the administrator for Bellary City Municipal Corporation, said that steps were being taken to streamline the internal distribution of drinking water in the city. According to him, there was a mismatch between the pumping of water from the two reservoirs and the distribution.
Records
"Going by the availability of water and pumping records, we should ensure daily water supply. But it was not so. The Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board has been asked to make a study with the help of the flow meter to find out where the pumped water was going and suggest remedies," he said.
