DHARWAD: Scores of trees were uprooted blocking several main roads and severing power supply lines after heavy downpour accompanied by strong gales, hailstones and lightning lashed Dharwad on Sunday evening. The whole of Dharwad plunged into darkness for more than three hours after some transformers were burnt and several power supply lines got severed. The thunderstorm began around 4 p.m. and continued till 4.45 p.m. According to a rough estimate, nearly 30 trees, small and big, were uprooted during the downpour. Roads in Sadhanakeri, opposite new bus stand, Haliyal Road, Kumareshwar Nagar and other areas were blocked as the trees fell on the road causing traffic congestion. Some transformers including the one at Mookambika Nagar were burnt during the thunderstorm.
