ON DEVELOPMENT: Head of the Development Studies Department of the Kannada University T.A. Chandrasekhar speaking at a seminar in Gulbarga on Sunday.
GULBARGA: Head of the Development Studies Department in Kannada University at Hampi T.A. Chandrasekhar on Sunday accused the State Government of not following the recommendations of the High Power Committee for Redressal of Regional Imbalance headed by late D.M. Nanjundappa in allocation of funds in the 2007-08 budget for the implementation of recommendations of the committee. Addressing a seminar organised by the Karnataka Pranta Raita Sangha and Hyderabad Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry here, Mr. Chandrasekhar said although the State Government had accepted the recommendations, it was only selectively adopting the recommendations and had not accepted the important parts, including the formula worked out by the committee for allocation of funds for the Most Backward, More Backward and Backward Taluks and the priority sectors identified by the committee. Mr. Chandrasekhar presenting facts and figures of the allocations made by the Government and the recommendations of the committee said the State Government instead of following the recommendations had adopted its own formula for allocating funds on the ratio of 50 per cent for the most backward taluks, 30 per cent for the more backward taluks and 20 per cent for the backward taluks. Mr. Chandrasekhar said the Government while deciding to release Rs. 1,571 crore for the implementation of the recommendations of the High Power Committee had unfortunately neither accepted the recommendations of the committee on fixing the priority of projects to be taken up with the funds nor accepted the guidelines for the amount of funds to be released for the various taluks.
Former Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council and suspended Janata Dal (S) MLA B.R. Patil said without knowing the implications of the implementation of the recommendations of the committee, people of the region had welcomed the proposals . President of the Gulbarga District unit of the Hyderabad Karnataka Horata Samiti S.G. Melkundi and president of the HKCCI Umakant Nigudgi spoke.
