Bullying tone

Thanks for publishing the text of the highly controversial letter sent to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh by Tom Lantos, chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the U.S. House of Representatives, and six other Congressmen (May 6). The letter clearly exposes the U.S.' desire to derive the maximum mileage out of India and to bulldoze New Delhi into toeing its line. Considering that the U.S. should rightfully be making its export control laws foolproof, it seems strange that the letter has accused India of "illegally" procuring sensitive technology from the U.S. for the ballistic missile programme. If compromises on its hard-earned sovereignty are the price India has to pay for nuclear cooperation with the U.S., it certainly is not worth it.

The belief that the U.S. is the world's conscience keeper comes through strongly in the letter. It is purely an internal matter of a sovereign nation to deal with another country the way it wants; the dictates are unwarranted and the attached threats about the bilateral relationship is an arm-twisting exercise. New Delhi must hold on to its right to do what it wants.

K.R.A. Narasiah,
Chennai
