Shocking

This refers to the article, `Jailhouse talk: a fate worse than debt' (May 5). It is shocking to find that penniless farmers, unable to repay loans, are being sent to jail. This is a blatant violation of the human rights guaranteed to the people. It is equally sad to learn that "big shot defaulters" are spared punishment. Such an action may even be the result of a collusion between these "big shots," the political turncoats, and even the banks.

The bottom line is that banking officials across all levels have been ineffective in mitigating the hardships of the farmers. The complicity of revenue department officials also needs to be highlighted.

The practice of blaming banks seems to be an easy option while handling the subject of farm crises without appreciating the rapid strides the banks have made in rural lending. They have geared up their systems for an efficient credit delivery to the agricultural sector over a period. Agricultural borrowers with good repayment records are promptly given fresh credit. Genuine difficulties are considered with empathy and necessary reliefs granted on a case-by-case basis. Sporadic instances of crisis faced by farmers should not be magnified out of proportion, but should be remedied properly by all concerned.

Chennai
