Traders want Centre to stop MNCs from entering retail business

Staff Reporter

Creation of special economic zones opposed

SALEM: Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sankangalin Peravi has urged the Centre to bar multinational companies (MNCs) and big Indian corporate houses from entering into retail business.

According to a resolution passed at the state conference of the association held here on Saturday, entry of MNCs and big corporate houses would severely affect small retailers in the country. It would force them to close their shops. A large number of people would be rendered jobless.

The Centre should enact a law to protect the sector from the negative impact of globalisation.

In another resolution, association members demanded that the State government withdraw the Value Added Tax (VAT).

The small traders were finding it difficult to maintain records and follow the procedures of VAT, they said.

They also opposed the creation of special economic zones in the country.

The association also appealed to the Centre to withdraw the service tax.
