Pudumaipithan's literary legacy remembered

CHENNAI: The contributions made by noted Tamil short story writer Pudumaipithan were remembered by the Tamil literary fraternity on Saturday at a function organised by the Tamil Nadu Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram in commemoration of the writer's centenary celebrations.

The State Government, especially Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, was committed to preserving the legacy of writers such as Pudumaipithan, PWD Minister Durai Murugan said inaugurating the function.

Pudumaipithan was a radical writer and thinker who foregrounded the plight of the dispossessed in his writings, Tourism and Culture Secretary V. Iraianbu said. He had given a new dimension to Tamil literature and created a huge readership.

His contributions will always be remembered.

"Profound writings"

Pudumaipithan carried over the legacy of poet Subramaniya Bharathi and will be remembered by generations to come for the profundity of his writings, Tamil writer D. Jayakanthan said.

It was imperative to read his works to understand the depth of Pudumaipithan's thoughts, he added.

M. Rajendran, Director, Tamil Development department; Rama Narayanan and Ilaya Bharathi, chairperson and member secretary respectively of the Tamil Nadu Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram and poet Vannadasan spoke.
