SRIKAKULAM: Describing the land occupation movement by Left parties as politically-motivated and aimed at getting political mileage, Revenue Minister Dharmana Prasada Rao on Sunday asserted that the Congress Government had taken all steps to provide not only house sites but also pucca houses to all the eligible persons under various schemes. "When the Government wants to provide pucca houses to all, launching agitation for house sites is meaningless," the Minister observed. Speaking to The Hindu , the Minister said that the Government had spent Rs.500 crore on acquisition of lands for house site pattas and construction of houses. So far more than 20 lakh houses had been constricted. The Congress Government had also distributed more than four lakh acres of land to the poor. Nowhere else such a scheme was implemented in the entire country, he claimed. It also initiated steps to take back assigned lands which were in the hands of the rich, he added. Even in cities like Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam, pucca houses were built in the prime areas and handed over to the eligible persons. Movements like the one by the Left would only lead to 'political confrontation' and would not help the poor, the Minister said. Were there any instances where such an agitations resulted in benefits to the poor, the Minister asked.
