ALAPPUZHA: The district administration on Sunday seized 10 lorries carrying gravel and six loads of sand from different places during a crackdown on illegal sand-mining in the taluks of Mavelikara and Chengannur. Six teams formed by District Collector V.K. Balakrishnan conducted surprise raids at various points from where sand was being illegally transported. While the six loads of sand were seized from a wharf near Venmani, the 10 lorries were seized while transporting gravel from Mavelikara, Mankamkuzhy, Nooranad and Kattanam. Mr. Balakrishnan told reporters that the crackdown on sand-mining would be intensified and that action would be taken against the guilty. The places that were raided included Palamel, Vallikkunnam, Vettiyar, Mankamkuzhy, Nooranad, Pandanad, Kodukulanji, Chamakavu and Venmani. RDO P.S. Velayudhan, district sheristadar Koshy John, Mavelikara Tahsildar V.J. George and Chengannur Tahsildar K. Sumathikuttiyamma led the riad.
