ALAPPUZHA: Work on the fishing harbour at Thottapally near here, which was sanctioned by the Centre in 2004, would be completed within two years, Cooperation Minister G. Sudhakaran said here on Sunday. The project, estimated to cost around Rs.15 crore, of which the Union Government would provide 50 per cent, envisages a 60-metre-long jetty, auction shed, roads, drinking water projects, electrification and a sewerage system. Nearly 20 fishing villages on the Alappuzha coast are expected to benefit from the harbour, which will enable over 1,000 country-boats and 100 boats to operate from it. Mr. Sudhakaran, who inaugurated the district-level distribution of LPG conversion kits for outboard engine boats of fishermen at the Poonthottam L.P. School, said the Finance Department's sanction had been acquired for the construction work of the Chethi Fishing Harbour at Mararikulam. The State Government was undertaking development projects worth Rs.3,000 crore for the fisheries sector, the Minister said.
