Dancing her way to the top

Correspondent

For Odissi dancer Narmada Tripathy, her father's support is her greatest asset

KORAPUT: She is a television artist, an Odissi dancer of repute and was born at Koraput. Apart from these statistics, for Narmada Tripathy, it's more important to have Dinabandhu Tripathy as a father.

Narmada has already performed Odissi dance in many stages starting from Koraput's Parab to bigger stages in Bangalore. She is acting as Rakha, the lead role in the Tele serial `Jaha Mun Khojichi Taha Mu Paichi' being telecast in Doordarshan. Birakishore Nayak, her dance guru at Koraput during her school days was happy with her achievement.

"She is also a good dancer. Narmada and her father knew the positive and odd sides of the industry. But for a conscious child like Narmada, everything will be for the better," Dinabandhu said.

Fear of denial

Narmada had found it difficult to practice dancing at the beginning of her career for the lack of space in her house and fear of denial from her father. But she had no knowledge that her father, a fourth grade employee in RWSS office at Koraput was getting more and more interested in promoting her art as he too was a stage artist from Annapurna - B group. It was a dream come true, Dinabandhu said. He asked her to pursue a career in this field.

Soon she won appreciation in the district and wished to get more for which she had to move to Bhubaneswar. She joined Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya in Bhubaneswar and continued her journey towards greater learning in the field while her father was worked day and night to support her. If Koraput had the scope to bring out the best in many artists who were struggling hard to come up, many would not have to cut short their dreams, Narmada said. "Everyone does not have Dinabandhu as his or her father," Birasen, her dance teacher in Koraput, said.
