BERHAMPUR: Students of Berhampur University celebrated the annual function of their Welfare Club on Saturday evening. Former chief minister and leader of the Opposition in State assembly, J.B. Patnaik and Union Minister of State for rural development, Chandrasekhar Sahu attended the function as guests. They also inaugurated the newly constructed sport auditorium, renovated students' union hall, some shops, boundary wall of Salunki hostel and a park in front of the academic block of the university. Speaking at this function, Mr. Patnaik said universities in underdeveloped states like Orissa should be provided special grants by the Central Government. According to him recent declaration of the Centre to provide grants worth Rs.100 crores to universities at metros of the country would bring in disparity among the universities. He demanded that universities in Orissa need extra central funds as they have less scope to generate their own income. Mr. Sahu promised to press upon the human resources ministry for provision of special grants for universities in underdeveloped areas like Berhampur. The president of the students' welfare club, Santosh Kumar Das presided over this function, which was also attended by the vice chancellor of the university, J.K.Baral. Secretary of the welfare club, N.Manohar read out the annual report. Cultural shows by students preceded the meeting and followed it. Before the meeting students of the university danced to the tunes of film songs and a full-fledged cultural show by an orchestra was the highlight of the function, which continued till late night providing entertainment to the students.
