"Dalits must be given compartmental system of reservation"

Staff Reporter

ERODE: The Dalits should be provided with the compartmental system of reservation, according to Pattali Makkal Katchi founder-leader S. Ramadoss.

"They are now provided with 18 per cent reservation in Tamil Nadu and there are three categories called Adidravidar, Arunthathiar and Devendrars," he told mediapersons on Sunday at Erode. To safeguard the interests of the minorities and the Dalits, the PMK would be holding a regional meet on minorities' rights to life.

For the western region, the conference was being held in Erode on Sunday. Even after several years, the minorities in India were living below the poverty line. Only twenty five percent of them were getting basic education. Dalit Christians were not entitled to reservation, whereas Dalit Buddhists and Dalit Sikhs were provided with reservation and getting government jobs.

The PMK leader wanted the Centre to implement the Sachar Committee recommendations immediately. He said the rights of the minorities were neglected in various sectors.

PMK president G.K. Mani MLA and Bhavani MLA K.V. Ramanathan were present.
