TIRUPUR: The Dravidar Kazhagam has convened a meeting of like-minded parties on Tuesday (May 8) in Chennai to discuss how to "effectively counter" the opposition to the alignment of the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project (SSCP) by "communal forces" and political opponents of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Government. Its president K. Veeramani told reporters here on Sunday that a State-wide joint campaign would be chalked out to create awareness among the people on the benefits of the project and the ulterior motives of its opponents. The DMK, the Pattali Makkal Katchi, the Left parties and Dalit Panthers of India have been invited to the meeting. He charged the Hindutva outfits, including the Bharatiya Janata Party, with trying to stage a comeback by spreading wrong information about the project. He said there was no scientific and historical basis for the existence of Ram Sethu.
150-year-old dream
Mr. Veeramani said that the Sethusamudram project was the dream of Tamils for the last 150 years. The scheme would accelerate the economic growth of the State and would create lakhs of jobs. Mr. Veeramani said that a joint campaign would be planned to thwart the designs of communal forces, which wanted to stall the SSCP.
