Absconding prisoner caught

TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi Rural Police on Sunday caught an absconding prisoner who was let out on parole from the Central Prison here a few months ago.

Kannusamy (34) of Manakkal near Lalgudi was sentenced to life imprisonment by a court here in September 2000 in a murder case. Kannusamy was lodged in the Central Prison. Police sources said the prisoner was let out on parole in February this year and he was supposed to report to the jail on March 27. However, he went absconding.

Prison authorities sought the assistance of Tiruchi Rural Police to register a case and nab the prisoner. A special team was formed to track Kannusamy who was caught near Lalgudi on Sunday, the sources said. — Staff Reporter

Hotelier held on cheating charge

CHENNAI: A hotelier from Nagercoil, who was at large, was arrested on charges of cheating a finance firm of around Rs. 85 lakh.

Based on a complaint from R. Somasundaram, manager, Upasana Finance, the Central Crime Branch police registered a case against S Nagaraj.

According to investigation officer N. Kannan, the accused had borrowed Rs. 85 lakh from the finance firm.

He had bought some equipment on hire purchase from the same firm.

Besides defaulting on the repayment of the loan, he also allegedly sold some of the equipment hypothecated to the company and siphoned off the money.

Already Nagaraj's brothers Murugan and Ganeshkumar have been arrested in this connection. Nagaraj was arrested on Saturday in Nagercoil and brought here where the police produced him before the Saidapet court, which remanded him to judicial custody, a press release said. — Staff Reporter

12 goats killed in lightning strike

COIMBATORE: As many 12 goats were killed when they were struck by lightning on Saturday at Kattanji Hills near Karamadai, over 25 km north of the city.

Rangasamy (50), Lakshmi (37) and Kumar (30) had taken about 30 goats out to graze when the lightning struck the goats and killed them instantly.

The three persons fell unconscious and were admitted to the Government Hospital at Mettupalayam.

Their condition was stable, according to police and hospital sources. — Special Correspondent

Vaiko in Thanjavur

Thanjavur: General secretary of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) Vaiko hoisted the party flag at the railway station here on Sunday to mark the beginning of the 14th year of the party.

He also released 14 pigeons.

Mr. Vaiko, who arrived here by train along with party MLA M. Kannappan, was given a warm welcome by cadres and leaders.

Durai Balakrishnan, Thanjavur district secretary of the MDMK, Udhayakumar, State vice-president, S.K. Ravichandran, town secretary, received Mr. Vaikho and Mr. Kannappan. Later sweets were distributed to the cadres.

Participating at a function, Mr. Vaiko said the MDMK would raise its voice to protect the rights of the Tamils wherever they lived in the world. — Special Correspondent

Man held for patricide

TIRUNELVELI: The Achchamputhur police have arrested a person for allegedly murdering his father.

Police said K. Kumar alias Rajakumar (26) of Maekkarai asked his father D. Krishnan (56) to apportion his share of the ancestral property to him immediately. As Mr. Krishnan refused, Rajakumar allegedly attacked his father with a boulder while he was sleeping in his residence on Saturday night. Krishnan, who suffered injuries on the head, died on the spot.

Signature campaign

Nagercoil: The Collector (in-charge), B. Jothi Nirmala, inaugurated a signature campaign organised by the Nehru Yuva Kendra here recently to commemorate the celebration of 150th year of `Sepoy Mutiny'. The youth co-ordinator, S. Senthil Kumar, said that the district unit of NYK conducted cultural programmes, debate, elocution competitions, drawing competition, public meeting, procession and honouring of freedom fighters to mark the occasion.Thirty-two youths, including nine girls, from Kanyakumari district were among those participated in a procession from Meerut to New Delhi. The Collector (in-charge) honoured freedom fighters by offering shawls to them at a function organised in Nagercoil. — Staff Reporter

Power shutdown

Erode: There will be no power supply in the following places from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 8, as the Kangeyam and Rasathavalasu sub-stations will be shut down for maintenance work, according to a press release from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board: Kangeyam, Goundempalayam, Kadaiyur, Uthiyur, Aarathozhuvu, Nalroad, Sivanmalai, Pazhayakottai, Nathakadaiyur, Vattamalai, Padiyandipalayam, Keeranure, Olapalayam, Aalambadi, Kasturibagram, Rasathavalasu, Muthaur, Vellakoil, Dasanaickkenpatty, Kambiliyampatty, Puduppai, Mettupalayam, Kurukkathi, Pachapalayam, Chettipalayam and Paappini villages.

Telephone adalat

ERODE: The General Manager, BSNL, Erode informed in a press release issued here on Sunday that a Telephone Adalat (Grievances) meeting would be conducted in the last week of May.

BSNL customers could send their grievances to the Assistant General Manager, Public Relations, BSNL, Gandhiji Road, Erode 638 001 on or before May 14. He also wanted the customers to inscribe the envelope as "Telephone Adalat Grievance".

Woman murdered

TIRUCHI: A 45-year-old woman, Saroja, was murdered allegedly by her neighbour following a dispute over a vacant space between their houses at Vadakku Neikuppai near Samayapuram on Saturday. Police have secured one Duraimanickam for the murder.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 75.55 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Sunday. The inflow was 1,635 cusecs and the discharge, 1,500 cusecs. - Staff Reporter
