THRISSUR: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government may initiate reforms that uphold merit and social justice in the education sector next year. He was addressing a meeting to inaugurate the golden jubilee celebrations of the Thrissur Government Engineering College. "The Kerala Professional Colleges Act, formulated to prevent commercialisation of education, could not be implemented because of a High Court order. The State Government then moved the Supreme Court. The LDF Government is committed to ensuring social justice in the education sector. The Government has implemented the spirit of the Act in institutions such as Lal Bahadur Sastri Institute of Science and Institute of Human Resources Development in Electronics," he said.
Doubts quality
Mr. Achuthanandan alleged that the quality of self-financing colleges left much to be desired. Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran said the Government would take steps to improve hostel facilities in the college and involve students in disaster management programmes. Mayor R. Bindu, P.R. Rajan, C.K. Chandrappan, Lonappan Nambadan, MPs, Thomas Unniyadan, Rajaji Mathew Thomas, Babu Palissery, Murali Perunnelli, K.V. Abdul Khader, MLAs, Collector M. Beena, District Panchayat president K. Sreekumar and K.V. Narayanan, principal of the college were among those present.
