Officials suspended

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has suspended 17 revenue officials on the basis of an inquiry by the Principal Secretary (Revenue) Nivedita P. Haran into the encroachment of government land in Munnar. Action against more officials is expected in the coming days.

The suspended officials include the tahsildars of Devikulam and Udumbachola taluks, where the largest number of encroachments had taken place, besides village officers. Meanwhile, the Sahyadri Protection Council will be organising a march from Munnar on May 13 demanding action against the encroachers in the hill resort. Council leader John Peruvanthanam said here on Sunday that the march would conclude in Thiruvananthapuram on May 18. — Special Correspondent

Chandy demands action

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has said the Left Democratic Front Government should stop making statements on the land grab in Munnar and start taking action on the matter. The Government is not there to protect UDF leaders if they had indulged in land grabbing. Anyhow nobody raised any complaints about UDF leaders during his recent visit to Munnar, Mr. Chandy told mediapersons during a visit to the Women and Children Hospital at Thycaud, here on Sunday. — Staff Reporter

Two killed in accident

PALAKKAD: Two persons were killed and 22 injured seriously when a private transport bus hit a motorbike and a roadside electric post at Chathappuram in Kalpathy on Sunday morning. Bus passenger Jayalakshmi (20), wife of Ananthakrishnan of Puduppariyaram, and Kannan (53), son of Ramaswamy of Sekharipuram, travelling on the bike were killed. His son Sasi (22), who was riding the motorbike, was seriously injured and admitted to a hospital in Coimbatore. The private bus was coming from Cherpulassery to Palakkad with 40 passengers when the accident occurred. — Staff Reporter

Education meet planned

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Government plans to organise an international meet on education in Thiruvananthapuram at the end of the year, Minister for Education M.A. Baby said on Sunday. He was inaugurating the newly constructed district office of the Kerala School Teachers' Association (KSTA) here. The Minister said experts in the field of education from different parts of the country as well as from other countries would participate in the meet. — Staff Reporter

MP flays court order

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Varkala Radhakrishnan, MP, has said that Thiruvananthapuram Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate's directive to the police to charge a case for culpable homicide not amounting to murder against Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy in connection with the death of infants at Sree Avittam Tirunal (SAT) Hospital here will imply that similar cases will have to be taken against judges if there is a death in police custody. — Special Correspondent

Congress to hold marches

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Congress mandalam committees would hold torchlight processions on Monday evening to press for the party's demand for the resignation of Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy owning responsibility for the death of infants at the SAT Hospital, KPCC general secretary M.I. Shanavas said here on Sunday. — Special Correspondent

Diploma programme

KOZHIKODE: The National Institute of Technology-Calicut (NIT-C) will conduct a diploma programme in small business management in association with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) for diploma holders in engineering and graduates in any discipline. The course will start on May 28. Copies of the application form and brochure can be had from Senior Project Leader, Entrepreneurship Development Cell, NIT-C , Kozhikode- 673601. Photo exhibition on Kuwait

KOZHIKODE: The Kuwait Information Centre of the Embassy of the State of Kuwait, New Delhi, will conduct an exhibition of photos and books on Kuwait with the cooperation of the Department of Arabic, University of Calicut, at the seminar complex on Calicut University campus from May 8 to 11. Calicut University Vice-Chancellor Anwar Jahan Zuberi will inaugurate the exhibition on May 8. — Staff Reporter

Office-bearers elected

KOZHIKODE: C.P.A. Azeez has been elected president and K.T. Aburahiman, general secretary of the district committee of Kerala State Muslim Youth League. Najeeb Kantapuram is the new treasurer. M. Aneez Rahman, P.K. Ajmal and O.P. Naseer are the new vice-presidents. K.V. Muhammed, M. Muhammed Shafi and T.K. Khalid are the new secretaries. The meeting to elect the office-bearers was inaugurated by K.M.Shaji, State general secretary of the Youth League.
