Congress leader resigns from party

Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: Former Haryana Home Minister and Punjabi leader Subhash Batra resigned from the Congress on Sunday at Rohtak along with 50-odd party workers.

Mr.Batra, who had served as Home Minister in the erstwhile Bhajan Lal Government, was at one time a close ally of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda who also belongs to Rohtak.

Mr.Batra told this correspondent over the telephone that he and the workers had faxed the joint resignation letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

Addressing a meeting of his supporters at Rohtak, Mr.Batra openly spoke in favour of Mr.Bhajan Lal and suspended MP Kuldip Bishnoi and alleged that the Congress had deviated from its policies geared towards the "aam admi'' (common man).

He further asserted that the people would ``give a befitting reply to the Congress as it had betrayed Mr.Bhajan Lal''.

Mr.Batra also flayed the Congress Government headed by Mr.Hooda for its acts of omission and commission.

He disclosed that earlier also he had written to Mrs.Sonia Gandhi apprising her about the political situation in the State and the "ground realities'' besides raising the issues relating to Special Economic Zone and landless labourers but he was not even given an opportunity of hearing.
