`Government derailing sports schemes'

Special Correspondent

Failure to distribute aid to indigent sportspersons alleged

Thiruvananthapuram: C. Mohanachandran, former president of the Kerala Sports Council, on Sunday alleged that the Left Democratic Front Government was trying to derail the sports promotion schemes and projects taken up by the previous United Democratic Front regime.

Addressing presspersons here, Mr. Mohanachandran said the Operation Gold training scheme launched in 76 schools as a pilot project in Thiruvananthapuram district had been given the go by this year. "Many other schemes designed to identify and nurture sports talent in youngsters were dropped. The annual College Games, Mini Games and National Marathon have not been conducted," he said. He alleged the Government was trying to close down the Water Sports Academy at Murukkumpuzha.
