`Withdraw decision on speed governors'

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Lorry Owners' Federation on Saturday urged the State Government to withdraw the notification making it compulsory for transport vehicles to install speed governors.

Federation president B. Channa Reddy told presspersons here that though the intention behind the notification was laudable, transport operators had to face several difficulties while following the direction.

He noted that the Kerala Government had some time back installed speed governors in KSRTC buses. However, it had to withdraw the equipment as the device affected the performance of vehicles. — Staff Reporter

Fellowship for journalist

Belgaum: The International Leprosy Union awarded "Madhyamdoot Fellowship" to Manisha Subhedar, a senior journalist working for the Marathi daily "Tarun Bharat," recently.

According to a release here on Sunday, the award was given to Ms. Subhedar for her active role as "Madhyamdoot" (media messenger) for generating awareness on leprosy, working towards eradication of the stigma and aiding the affected individuals in society. Ms. Subhedar was invited as one of the delegates to the first conference of lepers in New Delhi some time ago. — Staff Correspondent

Indian Army recruitment rally

MANGALORE: The Indian Army is conducting a recruitment rally for youth from Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Hassan, Chikmagalur, Shimoga, Davangere, Chitradurga and Udupi districts from May 17 to May 20 in Chikmagalur.

Youth in the age group of 16 to 23 are eligible to apply for the posts of soldier - general, clerk, storekeeper, technical, draftsman and general duty. — Staff Correspondent

Taluk panchayat gives petition

SHIMOGA: The Shimoga Taluk Panchayat, at its meeting held here on Saturday, expressed anguish over the taking away of powers from the taluk panchayats and urged the Government to restore all the powers to them. The resolution urging the Government to restore the powers given to the taluk panchayats was adopted. The members noted that the powers that were taken away from the taluk panchayats were given either to the zilla panchayats or the gram panchayats rendering them totally powerless. — Special Correspondent

One killed in accident

RAICHUR: One person was killed and three injured, one of who is serious, when a lorry rammed into a footpath slab on the Amareshwara-Devarabhupur Road near Amarehswara village of Lingsugur taluk on Saturday. The police have identified the injured as Suresh, the driver; Srikant and Mallareddeppa. Sharanappa died while being taken to the district civil hospital. The Lingsugur Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Criminal case booked

RAICHUR: The Raichur police have registered a criminal case against eight persons, including Babugouda Patil and Mallangouda Patil, owners of automobile shops, on charge of alleged dealing with the auto parts and engine oil by using fake labels of reputed companies in Deodurga town on Saturday. They also seized fake automobile goods, all worth Rs. 45,000, from the two shops. The Deodurga Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Canadian fellowship for varsity professor

MYSORE: The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute (SHARP) has awarded Canadian Studies Faculty Research Fellowship to R. Indira, professor in Sociology and Director of International Centre of the University of Mysore. The fellowship has been awarded to Dr. Indira to conduct research on management of common property resources among indigenous communities in Canada. The fellowship is supported by the International Council for Canadian Studies and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Canada, according to a press release. — Staff Correspondent

Officials suspended

CHAMARAJANAGAR: Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Chamarajanagar zilla panchayat G. Jayaram has suspended the junior engineer of the Kollegal division of the zilla panchayat Kantharajachari and storekeeper Siddaraju from service in connection with the alleged illegal transportation of rice meant for distribution under drought-relief work to Kerala. Announcing their suspension in a release here on Saturday, Mr. Jayaram said that following the report submitted in this regard by the Assistant Commissioner of the Kollegal division Shankarappa, Deputy Commissioner Vishwanath Reddy had registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Bangalore: In partial modification of Bangalore University's notification issued on May 20, the Fundamentals of Education Psychology examination to be held on May 9 for I Semester B.Ed., (revised scheme) has been postponed to May 11 and will be held between 10.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. on account of the CET, according to a press release issued here. — Staff Reporter

KPTCL recruitment

BANGALORE: The KPTCL technical aptitude test for recruitment of 237 assistant executive engineers (electrical and civil) for appointment in KPTCL and electricity supply companies will be held on May 13. Trapped

BANGALORE: Shivaraju, medical officer, and Nanjundappa, attender at Kamala Nehru T.B. Hospital in Kolar, were arrested by the Lokayukta police in Kolar on May 3 after they were caught accepting a bribe of Rs. 500 to admit Venkateshappa and provide treatment for tuberculosis. They were trapped after Mr. Venkateshappa filed a complaint with the Lokayukta. — Staff Reporter

DHARWAD: The Dharwad Police have booked a case on four persons involved in money-lending business for fleecing borrowers. Based on the complaint from Vadiraj Madhusudhan Mannari, the Vidyagiri Police have registered a case against Praveen Kavatal, Iranna Hembli, Hemaraj and Devaraj of Dharwad.
