Sloth bear found dead

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: A 10-year-old sloth bear was found dead in the Bear Safari at Bannerghatta National Park, near here, on Saturday. A blackbuck also died on Sunday morning in the zoo enclosure.

Assistant Conservator of Forests B. Jayaram told The Hindu that the reason for the death of Gopi, the sloth bear, would be known after the post-mortem results were released. He ruled out death due to infighting. The Bear Safari in Bannerghatta houses 57 sloth bears.

Mr. Jayaram also said a blackbuck died in the zoo enclosure during delivery. Internal haemorrhage was suspected to have caused the death of the animal. The calf also died, he added.
