HASSAN: Devihalli Chikke Gowda (75), an agriculturist who was also into money lending, committed suicide by consuming poison at Shantigrama in Hassan taluk on Saturday. But before he decided to end his life, Chikke Gowda destroyed currency worth Rs. 80,000 he had withdrawn from a bank. He is survived by wife and four sons. It is said that he was a miser and allegedly harassed his borrowers so much that people did not go to him to take money for the second time. On Friday, he withdrew Rs. 80,000 from the State Bank of Mysore. The currency notes were in the denomination of Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 100 and before committing suicide he tore them. As per RBI Currency Note Refund Act, the family can get back the money provided they paste the torn pieces of notes properly.
Reason
The reason for the suicide is not known, but the family suspects that as people had stopped borrowing from him, Chikke Gowda got frustrated. The Hassan Rural police are investigating the case.
