Staff Correspondent

Bad weather prevents helicopter from landing there

RAIN PLAYS SPOILSPORT: The shamiana put up at Belur for Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy's programme collapsed because of heavy rain. The downpour also affected the Chief Minister's other functions there.

HASSAN: Heavy rain lashed Belur on Sunday forcing Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Public Works Minister H.D. Revanna and the former Rajya Sabha member H.K. Javare Gowda to skip landing at the temporary helipad at Belur.

The helicopter hovered over the area for a while and then proceeded towards Basavapattana in Arakalgud taluk.

Over 10,000 people, including women, had gathered at the Government Junior College grounds in Belur where a big shamiana was put up.

Cultural programmes were going on and according to the schedule, the Chief Minister was to address them at 1.30 p.m. after inaugurating various works worth Rs. 100 crore.

Delay

The Chief Minister got delayed at K.R. Nagar and he finally left the place around 3 p.m.

Though the helicopter was sighted at 3.30 p.m. in Belur, it could not land.

Following strong winds and torrential rain, the shamiana collapsed and people ran hither and thither.

Many among the crowd were members of women SHG from the surrounding villages of Belur.

The food prepared for 15,000 people went waste.

However, there was no casualty.

About 20 disabled people who were trapped under the shamiana were safely pulled out.

Disappointment

Minister for Women and Child Welfare H.K. Kumaraswamy, who was visibly disappointed, said the Chief Minister would arrive at Belur on Monday at 9.30 a.m. and inaugurate a bridge, road and other works.
