`Install Rajkumar's statue in front of Vidhana Soudha'

BANGALORE: Former Minister P.G.R. Sindhia has demanded that the Government install a statue of Rajkumar in front of Vidhana Soudha in recognition of the thespian's contribution for the cause of Kannada.

He was speaking at a function to install the matinee idol's bronze statue in front of Binny Mills at Cottonpet here on Sunday by Dr. Rajkumar Abhimani Devarugala Balaga.

Extolling Rajkumar's apolitical approach and outlook, Mr. Sindhia said Rajkumar could have become the Chief Minister and a frontline political leader at the national level if he had contested against Indira Gandhi at the historic byelection to the Lok Sabha from Chikmagalur in November 1978.

By refusing to enter politics, Rajkumar had remained an unvanquished cultural hero of the people of the State even after his death, Mr. Sindhia said.

Suggesting that people should prevail upon the Government to install Rajkumar's statue in the front of the Vidhana Soudha, Mr. Sindhia said the Government should have taken steps in this regard by this time.

Rajkumar's second son Raghavendra Rajkumar said that installation of over 1,000 statues of Rajkumar across the State only reflected the emotional attachment of the people to the thespian.

Former Minister V.R. Krishna Iyer, vice-president of Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce S.R. Govindu, and former MLA P.S. Prakash were present.
