CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Sunday said the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government would not spare any effort at enhancing employment opportunities in the State.

After releasing 10 volumes of verses penned by lyricist Pa. Vijay, he said that during the last 10 months, the Government had taken steps to fulfil the DMK's election promise of providing three lakh jobs to the educated unemployed youth. The Government had appointed 1,49,609 persons.

The freeze on recruitment put by the previous All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government stood in the way of appointing persons to government jobs. The DMK Government had removed these restrictions. The Government would continue the new policy to ease the burden of the unemployed and their dependants, he said.

Referring to a crown and a panchaloka statue of `Tamil Thaai' presented to him at the function here, Mr. Karunanidhi said he always treated the office of the Chief Minister as a vehicle to serve people; it should not be used to wield power. "I will continue to perform the great task."

Recalling the dismissal of the DMK Government thrice, he said he had never regretted losing power for defending the rights of the State.

He appealed to writers and artistes to continue encouraging the Government through their works to serve the society.
