Three dead while cleaning sewer

NEW DELHI: Three persons cleaning a sewer pipeline died apparently from inhaling toxic fumes at Dabri here on Sunday. Around noon, they entered the pipeline and were trying to clear a blockage when they fell unconscious. They were rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital where they could not be revived. The police said they were trying to establish the identity of the deceased.

Auto-thief nabbed

NEW DELHI: A 24-year-old man has been arrested at Roop Nagar here on charges of auto-lifting. The police claim to have recovered a stolen Maruti Zen and a motorcycle from him.

Accused Bashir Khan was arrested when he was riding the stolen motorcycle near Nangia Park. The motorcycle was stolen from Roshanara Road a few days ago. During interrogation, Bashir purportedly confessed to his involvement in auto-lifting. The Zen recovered at his instance had been stolen from Shakti Nagar last month.

Chain-snatcher held

NEW DELHI: A young man has been arrested by the Roop Nagar police for his alleged involvement in chain snatching. The police claim to have recovered a country-made firearm from him.

The accused have been identified as Ritesh Kumar. During interrogation, he purportedly disclosed that he and his accomplice Shashikant had snatched a chain at Kamla Nagar last month. The police are trying to find if he was involved in other cases.

Dharna against liquor shops

NEW DELHI: Manavta Abhiyan, a socio-cultural organisation, and the Residents' Welfare Association of Malviya Nagar organised a dharna at Sheikh Sarai here on Sunday to protest against the Delhi Government's policy of granting liquor shop licenses in residential areas. Describing the Government's prohibition policy as a "short sighted one", Manavta Abhiyan president M. K. Gandhi said the Government should have a broader vision to collect revenue.

Deadline extended

NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, has extended its deadline for nominations for the "Nina Saxena Excellence in Technology" award. Nominations for entries to the award will now remain open till May 31. In a bid to encourage and promote technical innovation, IIT had announced the award past year to commemorate the spirit and memory of its illustrious alumna Nina Saxena who passed away in 2005.

The award is open to all technologists who are Indian citizens.

FIITJEE talent exam

NEW DELHI: FIITJEE, an institute that offers training for Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination, will conduct FIITJEE Talent Reward Exam 2007 on May 20 in 83 cities across India for all those students who are aspiring to appear in the IIT-JEE exam next year. The top three rankers will be awarded with cash prizes, a release said. The last date to register for this exam is May 16.
