Three killed in water-tank collapse

Staff Reporter

Material used for renovation may not have been of good quality, say Police

NEW DELHI: Three labourers were killed and two sustained injuries when a water-tank caved in on them at Mayur Vihar here on Sunday. The injured are said to be out of danger.

The labourers, who worked at a Metro workshop in Chilla Gaon, were taking a bath when the water-tank suddenly collapsed around 1-30 p.m. Three of them were killed on the spot, while two others sustained injuries. The deceased were identified as Vinod, Bashir and Abdul. One of the injured was identified as Jitender.

He sustained superficial injuries and was discharged after first-aid. The other injured, Mahendra Yadav, has been admitted to a private nursing home.

Enquiries revealed that about three days ago, the water-tank had been enlarged by extending its walls for the convenience of the labourers employed at the Metro's workshop where construction material is prepared. On Sunday, water was filled in the tank. "It appears that the construction material used to enlarge the tank was not of good quality, due to which it could not withstand the pressure of water," said a police officer.

The Mayur Vihar police have registered a case of negligence and are investigating to fix responsibility of the incident.
