Decision welcomed

Sir, — The decision of the Karnataka Cabinet on the regularisation of services of 3,300 temporary teachers on age-cum-merit basis against 8,225 teacher posts is of immense help to candidates who have crossed the age limit for recruitment. The move to confirm the services of non-teaching staff appointed in aided schools prior to 1992 is also appreciated. The coalition Government has done a lot for this cadre of teachers.

Dangerous speed breakers

Sir, — Authorities are putting the blame on road users for recent accidents in the city. They do not realise that many of the accidents are occurring because of unscientifically designed speed breakers. Many of them are unmarked making it difficult for road users to see them in time. Why can't the authorities get them painted as soon as they are laid?

Bad roads,

no buses

Sir, — Neither vehicles can ply nor commuters can walk on the road between Andhrahalli and Peenya II Stage. Buses have completely stopped operating on this route owing to the poor condition of the road. The authorities concerned have neglected the problem. We are in a fix as to whom to approach in this regard. Authorities should repair the road immediately. Vidyamanyanagar Main Road through Sri Raghavendra Nagar should also be repaired. There should also be a direct bus to Hegganahalli.

Service tax exemption

Sir, — The threshold level of service tax exemption for small service provider has been increased from Rs. 4 lakh to Rs. 8 lakh from April 1. In the case of transport charges of goods, the incidence of service tax is on the user of transport service and not on the provider of service. Hence, the authorities concerned need to clarify whether the threshold level of service tax exempted can be availed by the user of transport service, when the service provider is not in the picture.
