Visa racket busted, man arrested

BANGALORE: The police here have busted a racket that reportedly cheated 22 people from Uttar Pradesh promising visas to go to Saudi Arabia with the arrest of Mohammed Maulali (42) of Madeena Colony, Old Idgah, Gulbarga.

The accused had allegedly colluded with a person from Saudi Arabia and had collected original passports and Rs. 8.7 lakh in cash from the victims at a hotel in Kalasipalya here.

The racketeers had asked the victims to go to Escorts Hotel in Colaba in Mumbai to collect visas. But the accused had failed to turn up on the appointed day. They neither arranged visas nor returned the money and passports to the victims.

One of the victims, Nayeem Aqthar of Uttar Pradesh, lodged a complaint with the Kalasiplaya police.

The police arrested Maulali in Gulbarga. His associate in Saudi Arabia, Dawood Uttebi, is said to be working as a driver in West Asia. Efforts were on to arrest him, the police said.

Held

Commercial Street police arrested Mohammaed Jabiulla Shareef (20) and Mazar Khan (20), both residents of K.G. Halli, and Mohammed Inayath (20) of Byrasandra, who had allegedly robbed Tausif Mohammed Adab on April 30 on Labbe Masjid Street of a mobile phone.

The police have recovered the mobile phone. An associate of the accused, Suhaib Ahmed, is at large, the police said.

In another case, K.G. Halli police arrested Nagesh of Mahadevapura here and Kumaraswamy of Sakleshpura in Hassan district soon after they allegedly chased a lorry and robbed its driver of Rs. 5,000 in cash on Friday.

The police gave the name of the lorry driver as Bhairulal. The police arrested the accused on Saturday.

Killed

A ninth standard student, Sanjay (17), was killed on the spot when a branch of a tree fell on him near Maruthinagar bus stop in Yelahanka on Saturday.

The police said the victim was from Mandya and was staying with a relative's house in Channappanahalli.
