BANGALORE: Private companies have a crucial role to play in addressing the inadequacies plaguing the Indian education system, said Ravi Venkatesan, chairman and general manager, Microsoft India, here on Sunday. Speaking after receiving the National Eminence Award instituted by the National Education Society's National Centre for Research and Development in Education, Science and Technology, Mumbai, he regretted that only one out of four fresh engineering graduates is employable and the others have to be trained by thecompanies which cost them much. Microsoft has embarked on a mission to bring in changes in the education system by taking up many initiatives. It has been encouraging better use of science and technology to improve the system, Mr. Venkatesan said. Under its "Shiksha" initiative, Microsoft has imparted training to about 1.2 lakh teachers in computer education and in turn about 50 lakh children have benefited by it, he said. Mr. Venkatesan received a citation and a gold medal from Sri Jayendra Saraswati of Kamakoti Peetam in Kancheepuram. Six teachers received the national award for their paper on "Innovative teacher". Prabha Sridhar, principal, Pavan English School, who was the only recipient from Karnataka, said that the award was given to her in recognition of her contribution to the field of education and it has motivated her to achieve further.
