This Day That Age
The Food and Agriculture Minister, Mr. A.P. Jain, assured the country that the import programme for wheat and rice would be firmly carried out during the next few years and the Government would not only be able to meet current demands but also build up reserves. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi on May 6, he explained that the food policy, based on the Planning Commission's recommendation, was to import six million tons of foodgrains during the Second Plan period to meet the needs of the growing population. Last year's imports were of the order of 1.42 million tons and this year it will be over 1.76 million tons. It is also proposed to import all the wheat and rice under the Indo-US farm surplus purchase agreement by the middle of next year.
