Kolkata: Almost all the top athletes of the country are expected to take part in the XIII Federation Cup athletics to be held at the Salt Lake Stadium and SAI Eastern Centre from Thursday. The performances in the event, originally scheduled in Delhi, will be treated as the qualifying mark for the team to the Asian track and field meet at Lebanon in July. Around 550 athletes from 20 State teams and eight recognised units of Athletics Federation of India will take part, according to the figures provided by the organiser West Bengal Athletic Association. The focus will be mainly on the athletes who returned, after training in South Africa's high altitude Potchefstroom, late last month.
Top names in fray
Top athletes like K.M. Binu (400m), Naunidh Singh (110m hurdles), Harishankar Roy and Benedict Stanley (both high jump), Joseph Abraham (400m hurdles) are the star names in the men's section. Among the women, the cast is likely to be led by long jumper Anju Bobby George. Asian Games medallist Manjit Kaur (400m), heptathlete J.J. Shobha, Seema Antil (discus) would also be seen in action. Prominent among the absentees are two local names heptathlete Soma Biswas and Pinki Pramanik (400 & 800m). While the former got married recently, the latter got injured while training for the event.
