Sports : General
Consistent performer Tamil Nadu cricketer S. Sharath, who announced his retirement recently, was a consistent batsman in the domestic circuit who never got an opportunity to play for the country. This has been something familiar to the Tamil Nadu players. Talented and deserving cricketers from the State rarely come up for discussion when the Indian team is selected.
P. Krishna,
Good coverage Sheer professionalism and flair enabled Australia to win the ICC World Cup. Aside from the competition, The Hindu provided us with good coverage. The columns by eminent cricketers Barry Richards, Sir Vivian Richards and Glenn McGrath, apart from Tom Moody, made interesting reading. Your correspondent S. Ram Mahesh too deserves praise for his incisive write-ups.
V.V. Subramanian,
Losing again The Indian hockey team, despite the inclusion of a number of promising youngsters and good coaching, lost to the Australians in the ongoing Azlan Shah tournament in Ipoh. The young team played well but wasted several opportunities. The younger generation needs to strain every nerve if India is to recapture past glory.
K.D. Viswanaathan,
Distressing It is distressing to note that India is ranked below Bangladesh as per the Maruti Suzuki cricket ratings. The World Cup has exposed the lack of spirit, planning and aggression in Indian cricket. As new coach Ravi Shastri has said, the cricketers need to enjoy the game and develop a positive attitude. Can Shastri trigger a turnaround?
R.S. Sami,
Kapil is right Kapil Dev has rightly said that Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar were dropped from the squad and not rested for the ODIs against Bangladesh. A player can be rested only on health grounds. As Kapil said, one has to call a spade a spade, and not the way the BCCI and national selectors did.
K. Pradeep,
Best umpires? While the ICC has experimented with rules to make the ODI game more interesting, little seems to have gone into assessing the performance of the umpires. While umpires from India, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka did not find favour, the so-called `best' in the panel made blunders.
V. Mahalingam,
Chennai
