Will do nothing to help BJP come to power: Karat

Staff Reporter

KANNUR: Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat has said the party will do nothing to help the Bharatiya Janata Party come to power.

He was addressing a rally of CPI(M) workers organised here on Monday to mark the culmination of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the E.M.S. Namboodiripad Ministry.

Mr. Karat said the CPI(M), which was extending outside support to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre, would continue to oppose some of its policies and pursue the third front option.

Observing that the BJP was hoping the UPA Government's wrong policies would help it come to power, Mr. Karat said it was "far worse" than the Congress. It was conducting a vicious campaign against the minorities, he said, referring to the encounter killing of Kausarbi in Gujarat. The BJP was also "notoriously corrupt."

On the UPA Government's negotiations with the United States on the nuclear energy issue, he said the CPI(M) would not accept any agreement that impinged on the country's independent foreign policy. The Government should not allow the U.S. to intervene in the country's policies.

On the Nandigram issue, he said the Left Front Government in West Bengal would protect agriculture and strengthen industries. Only one per cent of agricultural land was being used for setting up industrial units. In West Bengal, 33,000 acres were being distributed among the landless.

Mr. Karat said every policy introduced by the first Namboodiripad Ministry was relevant even today. The V.S. Achuthanandan Government was trying to fulfil some measures started in 1957.

CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan and Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan were present at the rally.
