"Direct police to register FIR" No merit in complaint: Gujarat counsel
NEW DELHI : The Supreme Court on Monday reserved verdict on a petition seeking to prosecute Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for alleged inflammatory speeches and disparaging remarks against Muslims, thereby disturbing communal harmony in the State. In his writ petition, Alyque Padamsee sought a direction to the police station concerned to register a first information report against Mr. Modi, whose statements at public meetings were "in violation" of the Indian Penal Code. The police had failed to register a complaint. Counsel for the petitioner said Mr. Modi made offensive remarks about relief camps for Muslims in the wake of the Godhra riots. He read out the offending portions in the speeches. Counsel for Gujarat, Mukul Rohatgi, said the petitioner had sent a complaint to the Mahrashtra government, which forwarded it to Gujarat. The DGP found no merit in the complaint and no action was taken.
