Barnala to felicitate Karunanidhi

CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala will felicitate Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in the Assembly on May 11 for the latter's role as a legislator for five decades.

Speaker R. Avudaiappan announced that Mr. Barnala and leaders of legislature parties would present their felicitations in the House. No other business would be taken up that day, he said. — Special Correspondent

Plea for stamp on Narayanakavi

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi informed the Assembly on Monday that the State would recommend to the Centre to issue a special stamp to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Udumalai Narayanakavi.

Responding to a question from B. Ranganathan (DMK), the Chief Minister said he was taking the member's question as a demand and would write to the Centre on this. The State had already constructed a memorial and opened a library to commemorate the services of the freedom fighter, Mr. Karunanidhi said. — Special Correspondent

Panchaloha idols unearthed

NAGAPATTINAM: Eighteen ancient panchaloha idols of various deities were unearthed while digging a piece of land at Arundavampulam village near Tirukkuvalai in Nagapattinam district two days ago.

Revenue officials handed over the idols to the Government museum here.

Archaeologists said the idols dated back to the Chola period. The idols had antique value and would be worth several crores of rupees in the international market, official sources said. — Special Correspondent

Assembly observes two-minute silence

CHENNAI: The Assembly observed a two-minute silence on Monday in memory of those who died in the Kenyan airways crash in Cameroon. Speaker R. Avudaiappan offered condolences on behalf of the House to the next of kin of those who had died in the air crash. — Special Correspondent

Admissions for LIBA part-time course

CHENNAI: Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA), Chennai, has announced admissions for its three-year part-time PGDBM (Post Graduate Diploma In Business Management) programme. The AICTE-approved programme offers specialisation in marketing, finance, HR or general management.

Last date for receipt of completed applications is May 10. — Special Correspondent

Wildlife park in southern part soon

TIRUCHI: Steps were being taken to establish a wildlife park on the lines of the Vandalur Zoological Park in the Southern part of the State at the earliest, Forest Minister N. Selvaraj has said. Permission from the Central Government would be obtained soon and the park could possibly be located in the Musiri constituency, Mr. Selvaraj indicated speaking at a function to mark the distribution of free television sets at Omanthur village near Manachanallur here on Sunday.

The Minister also said electric fences would be put up by his department for a stretch of about 300 km this year to prevent wild animals straying into agricultural fields. — Special Correspondent

Woman creates flutter

Udhagamandalam: A woman created flutter near the Collectorate here on Monday. Leela Mani, a resident of Nellikunnu near Gudalur, came with her aunt Thangam and sat opposite the Collector's office. She alleged in a petition addressed to various persons, including the Collector, that some persons at Devarshola had cheated her with the connivance of the local police. They were occupying her property extending over about 2.50 acres. For the past seven years she had been running from pillar-to-post in vain for retrieving her property. Despite repeated representations to the administration and the police, no action had been taken. Later, she threatened to set herself ablaze. The police removed the duo to the station.

Murdered

Udhagamandalam: A woman was murdered near Gudalur on Sunday. According to the police, following a domestic dispute, Vellusamy (65), an estate labourer of Nellakottai, had hacked his wife Azhagammal (60) with a knife. She died on the spot. A search is on for Vellusamy. The Nellakottai police have registered a case.

Programme

Coimbatore: Adobe will organise a programme on its "Creative Suite 3 Launch" on May 15.

According to a release, it is a dream toolkit for print publishing, web and mobile publishing. It combines all new versions of essential tools for producing professional page, image editing and illustration.

Health camp

Coimbatore: PSG College of Physiotherapy and PSG Rural Health Centre will conduct a physiotherapy camp on May 13 at the Panchayat Union Elementary School, Onappalayam. According to a release, the camp will focus on various joint pains, obesity and diabetes.

Exhibition

PDS rice seized

SIVAKASI: Revenue officials seized 2,750 kg of rice meant for sale through the Public Distribution System from a lorry and an autorickshaw here on Monday. Acting on a tip off, the Sivakasi Revenue Divisional Officer, B. Ganesan, and the Tahsildar, Madhavan Pillai, raided the vehicles, which were abandoned by the drivers. The officials seized 55 bags, each containing 50 kg, and the vehicles.

Horticulture schemes for Ramnad

RAMANATHAPURAM: The National Horticulture Mission will implement various schemes in the district at an estimate of Rs.6 crore during the current year. The Collector, R. Kirlosh Kumar, said that farmers could get 50 to 75 per cent subsidy for undertaking mango, amla, chilli, farm bonds, honey farming and others.

Interested farmers could contact the Assistant Director, Horticulture and the horticulture officers of Ramanathapuram, Kamudhi and Paramakudi.

Water level

MADURAI: Water level in the Periyar dam stood at 109 feet with an inflow of 140 cusecs and a discharge of 142 cusecs.

The level in the Vaigai dam was 29.63 feet with an inflow of 23 cusecs and a discharge of 41 cusecs.

The combined Periyar credit stood at 838 mcft.

Gudalur recorded a rainfall of 32 mm followed by Uthamapalayam - 10 mm, Peranai - 6 mm, Manjalar dam - 5 mm, Veerapandi - 3 mm and Sattaiyar dam - 1 mm. — Staff Reporter

Group houses sought

ERODE: Collector T. Udhaychandran on Monday received over 400 petitions at the grievances meeting in the Collectorate. About 50 nomads requested him to sanction funds for the construction of group houses for them. A couple gave a petition stating that they had two boys, who had speech and hearing impairment respectively. They appealed to the Collector to arrange for a corrective surgery. He arranged medical examination for the boys. District Revenue Officer V. Santha and DRDO Project Officer R. Rajashree also received petitions.

Youth dies

SALEM: A youth died in an accident near Salem Railway Junction recently. The police said Mahendran (25) was walking on the road when a private bus hit him. He sustained injuries and was admitted to the Government Hospital where he died on Sunday.

Abolition of Assembly segment opposed

Nagercoil: Activists of the Congress, led by Thuckalay town secretary, Mohamed Rabi, observed a fast in front of the Revenue Divisional Office on Monday to protest against the Election Commission's decision to abolish the Padmanabhapuram Assembly constituency. They also decided to observe a fast for another 10 days.

"Fill up vacancies in aided private schools"

Nagercoil: Members of the Tamil Nadu Aided Private Schools Association observed a fast in front of the Collectorate here on Monday to urge the Government to find out an early solution to their multi-point charter of demands, including filling up of vacancies in aided private schools. The district president (Kuzuthurai division), Mukunthan Nair led the agitation.

Driver commits suicide

Nagercoil: A driver committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree on Monday. According to the police, Sivalingam (30) of Vathiyarvilai, near Nagercoil, took this extreme step owing to a dispute with his parents.

Man ends life

PUDUKOTTAI: Sivasaravanan (28) of Alankudi block allegedly committed suicide by hanging at a shop near the new bus stand here in the early hours of Monday.

Dies in accident

PUDUKOTTAI: Chelliah (40) of Ponnampatti near here was fatally knocked down by a lorry here on Sunday night. He was riding a two-wheeler to Alankudi. The lorry was coming from Alankudi to Pudukottai.

8.32 lakh covered

PUDUKOTTAI: A total of 8,32,227 voters, out of the electorate strength of 8,41,031, have been covered in the photo-electoral rolls for all the five Assembly segments in the district. In a press release, Collector S. J. Chiru said that the district has covered 98.95 percentage of voters in the photo electoral roll.

The rest would be covered during the summary revision of the photo electoral rolls to be conducted shortly.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 75.51 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Monday. The inflow was 1,558 cusecs and the discharge was 1,500 cusecs.
