Dullo opposes Amarinder's rally

Chandigarh: Punjab Congress chief Shamsher Singh Dullo on Monday disapproved the proposed demonstration by former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on May 9 against the Akalis, saying it was being convened "without the party's consent".

"Few MLAs are organising a rally to confront the Akalis. However, such a decision is taken by these MLAs without the Pradesh Congress Committee's permission," Mr. Dullo, a known critic of Amarinder Singh, told reporters after chairing a meeting of block presidents and other key functionaries of the party here.

However, at the meeting, leader of opposition in Punjab Assembly Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh were conspicuous by their absence.

No permission

"Before organising such a protest rally, permission must be sought before hand from the Pradesh Congress Committee," Mr. Dullo said, referring to the rally proposed by Congress MLA Gurpreet Singh Kangar at Rampura Phul in Bathinda district to confront Akalis for their "political vendetta" on May 9. While the former Chief Minister had already announced to take on Akalis in the rally, Mr. Dullo said he and Ms. Bhattal would not participate in the protest. -- PTI
