Power discoms to deploy buses to carry message to consumers' doorstep

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Government's Power Department will use swanky air-conditioned buses to take the message of energy conservation right up to the consumers' doorstep and also to lend an ear to their grievances. The department has decided to procure three mobile buses with low floors to be used by the power distribution companies for bolstering energy-saving initiatives.

"These buses will be deployed by the three power discoms to promote the concept of energy efficiency, use of renewable energy, and also to have an outreach to local residents for handling their public grievances," said a senior Delhi Transco official. While the Energy Efficiency and Renewal Energy Management Centre of the Power Department will be entrusted to deal with the promotion of energy efficiency, the discoms will shoulder the responsibility of handling public grievances. "The air-conditioned buses will have computers mounted inside and some area for holding display charts and boards. There will also be some space set aside for sale of energy-saving compact fluorescent lamps and tubes," the official said.

Referring to the areas of energy conservation and promotion of renewable energy, the official said the buses would be used to disseminate information about cutting down dependence on non-renewable energy and the subsidy that consumers can avail themselves of by opting for renewable energy. "The buses will promote use of solar energy devices, electric chokes and also propagate the merits of undertaking energy audits of large buildings. They can also double up as stores for sale of compact fluorescent tube-lights, which are difficult to store otherwise," the official said. The department is hopeful that the buses will also help in strengthening the public grievances redress mechanism. "The buses will have computers with Internet connectivity and allow discoms to register consumers' grievances and settle their complaints."

Each of these buses will have its own information display system and graphic design and would move from one place to another according to a pre-appointed schedule.
