Encroachments removal project to be launched soon

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A pilot project for removing encroachments from government land will soon be launched at East of Kailash in South Delhi. During the project, residents' welfare associations and non-government organisations will work closely with the Delhi High Court-appointed Monitoring Committee. A decision to the effect was taken at a meeting of residents and representatives of various civil society groups with the Monitoring Committee headed by B. L. Vohra and R. S. Gupta. During the meeting, the residents had put forth their concerns about growing encroachments on government land in various parts of Delhi.

During the meeting, D. B. Sood of the East of Kailash Residents' Welfare Association exhibited documentary evidence of illegal occupation of parks and public land in the colony, while Shiv Kumar Gupta of Safdarjung Development Area alleged that people who lodge complaints are threatened and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi does not act on them. Varinder Arora of Kiran Vihar said there was illegal encroachment on Delhi Development Authority land in this East Delhi colony and yet the Authority had not initiated any action. It was then decided that RWAs and NGOs would aid and assist the panel in removing encroachments from government land. For this purpose, they will develop a list of prioritised actions required in their area for maximum impact in the shortest period of time and place it before the Monitoring Committee.

Sanjay Kaul of People's Action said the Monitoring Committee should first ensure that all public land is free of encroachment and that political parties must make their stand clear on the issue
