ANANTAPUR: Of late, the district unit of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is abuzz with activity for over a month now for all sorts of reasons - starting with the District Planning Council (DPC) elections, where the party suffered reverses due to cross voting despite having majority ZPTC members. The party had set up a two-member committee with legislators P. Ranganayakulu and B.C. Govindappa to go into the ZPTC members' re-enactment of July 2006 defection and cross voting. While the defection of two members cost the TDP the Zilla Parishad Chairperson's post in July, it also cost the party the decisive strength in the DPC. The party is yet to act upon the panel report. Moreover, it is learnt that none is blamed for the debacle. Allegations on former Minister N. Kistappa's involvement in the fake passport racket have also caused a stir in the party.
Leadership ignored
Party's newly elected MLC P. Raghunatha Reddy's padayatra in support of the proposed Science City in O.D.Cheruvu and Amadagur mandals has raised many eyebrows within the party as it was taken out in spite of the district leadership's advice against it. The padayatra was taken out from April 29 to May 1. Now, the party politburo member and former Member of Parliament K. Srinivasulu and Uravakonda legislator P. Keshav have planned to embark upon another padayatra exposing the Government's lack of sincerity in taking up the modernisation of Tungabhadra Right High Level Canal, the lone source of irrigation in the district.
Ten-day padayatra
The 10-day padayatra will cover 196 km in six constituencies served by the canal, with a meeting and a dharna in front of the Collectorate. The march will begin from the point where the HLC enters the State in Bommanahal mandal. He alleged that the State Government is neglecting HLC modernisation. With the dilapidated lining of the canal coupled with tapping of water by Karnataka, the State State is receiving 26 tmcft water against 42.5 tmcft allocation, including 10 tmcft given for Penna Ahobilam Balancing Reservoir, Mr. Srinivasulu said.
