NAGAPATTINAM: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has captured the chairmanship of the Nagapattinam municipality in the election held as per the direction of the State Election Commission and the Madras High Court, here on Monday amid tight security. The election was caused following the resignation of chairperson Thangapillai on March 22 this year R. Chandramohan of the AIADMK and councillor of ward 28 was declared elected. He defeated Sridhar of the DMK by a margin of two votes. In the 36-member municipal council, the DMK has 13 councillors followed by AIADMK 12, Independents eight, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, CPI and CPM one each. While Mr. Chandramohan polled 19 votes, Mr. Sridhar secured 17 votes. The election was conducted in the presence of Tenkasi S. Jawahar, Collector, and District Election Officer, V. Devanathan, Assistant Registrar of Madras High Court, appointed as observer by the High Court to ensure free and fair election with specific stress on maintaining secrecy in polling and T.Arumugum, Chief Administrative Officer of the State Election Commission. R. Pitchai, District Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Officer, was appointed as the Returning Officer, who conducted the election. Mr. Pitchai handed over the certificate of victory to Chandramohan at the municipal hall in the presence of officials and partymen.
Filed petition
Mr. Chandramohan had filed a petition in the Madras High Court challenging the election of Thangapillai (DMK) as chairperson of the Nagapattinam municipality stating that the election was not held in a free and fair manner. Ms. Thangapillai had tendered her resignation on March 22, a day before the verdict of the High Court.
