Congress alleges plot

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Monday alleged that there was a plot to "eliminate" the suspended police officer, D.G. Vanzara, "implicate" a Muslim, and create a situation for a communal flare-up in Gujarat.

Party spokesperson Satyavrat Chaturvedi said this "information" had come to him through confidential sources and the aim was to foment communal trouble ahead of the elections and polarise society.

Mr. Chaturvedi refused to divulge the level of the source or even whether it was political or official. Asked why the party had not drawn the attention of the Centre to such "information", the spokesperson said it had come to him just before the press briefing.
