BANGALORE: Former Solicitor General of India Soli Sorabjee found himself in a piquant situation here on Friday where he had to appear on behalf of a government agency in one case before the Karnataka High Court and against the Government itself in another case. The first case related to a stay on all further acquisitions and allotments of agricultural land by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) in and around Bangalore city and Bangalore districts. While a former Advocate-General of Karnataka had appeared for the KIADB earlier, Mr. Sorabjee had been requested to argue for the board in the appeal. When the arguments commenced and a Division Bench stayed the single judge's order, the court witnessed an interesting aside between the Bench and the Bar. When judge K. Bhaktavatsala, who was heading the Bench, remarked that Mr. Sorabjee could be termed as a legal luminary, the junior judge on the Bench remarked that a judge of another High Court had been transferred after he used that expression in his order. But Mr. Bhaktavatsala insisted that Mr. Sorabjee was indeed a legal luminary. On his part, Mr. Sorabjee was modest in accepting the accolade. Soon after the case was concluded, Mr. Sorabjee was seen in another court, this time against the Government.
