NEW DELHI: Three children were charred to death and four other persons sustained serious burns in a fire that broke out in a slum cluster at Chankayapuri here on Monday. Nearly 20 jhuggis were gutted. According to a Fire Service officer, the fire broke out at 11-40 p.m. on Monday and four fire tenders took over an hour to put out the blaze. The fire spread rapidly because of the use of inflammable materials like cardboard, polyester and wood in the jhuggis, said the officer. Seven persons, including five children, sustained serious burns and were rushed to the nearby Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Three of the injured -- Musharraf (7), Kohinoor (5) and Muzharraf (4) -- were declared brought dead on arrival. "The fire was probably caused by a short circuit," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Anand Mohan.
