Bangalore: The South Western Railway Employees Sangh, affiliated to the National Federation of Indian Railwaymen (NFIR), New Delhi, has asked the 6th Pay Commission and the Central Government to fix the minimum pay of a railway employee at Rs.11,000 and take steps to fill all vacancies in the railways with immediate effect. Speaking to presspersons here on Monday, M. Raghavaiah, general secretary of the federation, said the railways was making profit but the working conditions of the employees had not improved. There had been considerable downsizing and the employee strength has gone down from 18 lakh earlier to 14.25 lakh at present. This has increased the burden of the employees, he said. He said there were 1,70,000 vacancies in the railways, of which 85,000 posts were in the safety category. Because of the dearth in manpower the safety standards in the railways were being compromised. The Centre should modify its recruitment policy and in the case of Group-D employees, recruitment should be made at the local level. He also demanded that better opportunities for promotion and career improvement should be given to all categories of railway employees.
